What Should You Have in Your Homeopathic First Aid Kit – Part 1

I’m doing a little series on the most basic remedies you need for taking care of yourself and your loved ones. My first aid kit has about 100 remedies now, but you really only need 5-6 to cover the most acute situations and give a helping hand when most needed.

Arnica – Homeopathy’s Most Famous and the Number 1 Remedy You Need!

Arnica is a must-have for everyone’s medicine cabinet and first aid kit. You should not be without it!

Life can be bumpy at times, and if we’ve lost our bounce back, we might need a little bit of help in times of shock, injury, and trauma.

Arnica grows on high mountain sides and its Latin name is Arnica montana. The clue to its use is right there in front of us: when we attempt to scale the heights, we must also risk a little fall as well. Arnica is wonderful for bruises, black eyes, bumps to the head, and even broken bones. It can be used in a cream or a herbal tincture, but its most flexible and useful form is the homeopathic remedy.

Uses of Arnica:

  • Falls
  • Injuries of all kinds where there has been a shock involved
  • Any physical shock, such as a bump in the car or a fall in the playground
  • Bruising of all kinds
  • Bumps to the head (do get these checked out medically for young children and anyone you suspect has a concussion)
  • Black eyes and eye trauma
  • Before, during, and after birth in mother and child
  • Post-surgery healing (use with caution if you are on blood thinners)

Emotional Remedy Picture

The emotional remedy picture of homeopathic arnica is something many of us will recognize: a person who has been in some form of trauma but insists they are okay and do not want to see a doctor, yet it is obvious they are in shock. Arnica will gently bring them out of it and back to themselves.

Dosages and Potencies

Arnica is a remedy for all times and seasons. Make sure you have both the 30c (for minor ailments) and the 200c (for anything more acute and intense).

It’s a must for hill climbers and walkers in case of injury, especially when far from help or rescue. It can help ease symptoms and any signs of shock. Parents should also carry this one with them, along with a few other vital first aid remedies.

If in any doubt about the injury, please get it checked by a medical professional.

Taking the Remedy:

  • For minor bumps and bruises: Arnica 30c is probably the most useful potency and most readily available. Take one every half hour for up to four doses to begin with, and then only repeat one dose if symptoms return over the next few hours or days.
  • For more acute shock: Arnica 200c is the best, but use the 30c if that is all you have. Take one dose as soon as possible and monitor the person closely. Repeat 2 or 3 more times if needed.

Where Can I Buy It?

Local health food or wellbeing shops and places like Boots usually stock Arnica. Brands like Helios, Ainsworths, Nelsons, and Weleda are all excellent and well-recommended. Alternatively, your homeopath can supply it if you ask them.
